Lyttelton, Christchurch's Port

Travel through the Lyttelton Tunnel of over the Port Hills to the beautiful port of Lyttelton. Lyttelton, a suburb of Christchurch, is a vibrant, scenic seaside town with Historic Area status.

This stunning harbour town in the Banks Peninsular offers amazing scenery, fascinating European and Maori histories and plenty of leisure opportunities. The working port of Lyttelton is a popular stop-off for cruise ships. Lyttelton can be reached by driving the short distance through the road tunnel, or by driving or walking the scenic route over the Port Hills.

Historic Lyttelton has an excellent local maritime themed museum. Being the expedition launching point for olden-day Antarctic expeditions, the Antarctic Gallery is superb. The neo-Gothic Timeball Station is also of historic interest. Noted as the aquatic playground of Christchurch, Lyttelton Harbour is a terrific destination for yachting, fishing and water-skiing. There are plenty of beaches and sheltered bays for swimming in or relaxing on.

The Black Cat Cruises are a great way to experience the beauty of the harbour; learn about the area's history; observe the amazing birdlife (including penguins) and a fantastic opportunity to watch the gorgeous hector dolphins at play.

The company also offers a ferry service from Lyttelton to Diamond Harbour and Quail and Ripapa Islands. Diamond Harbour is a great destination for a day trip. Enjoy an active walk to Mount Herbert or stroll around the beaches and cliff tops before taking a dip at the lovely Purau Bay. Quail Island is a recreational reserve with an emphasis on restoration of native vegetation. The Island is home to many native birds. Take a picnic and swimming togs and enjoy a great day out playing on the Island. This historical Island of Ripapa, home to Ford Jervois, is only accessible by boat.

Lyttelton and Diamond Harbour have a range of bars, cafés and restaurants, many of which offer entertainment. The Lyttelton Farmers Market is charming and popular way to spend a Saturday morning away from the hustle and bustle of the city just over the hill.
