Kaiapoi is a great alternative to staying in Christchurch. Just 20 minutes north of Christchurch in the South Island, Kaiapoi is a pleasant, picturesque river town in the Waimakariri district.

Basking on a wide east coast beach, Kaiapoi is a popular destination for campers and holidaymakers. The beautiful town, with its variety of shops and food outlets, is a fantastic location for a spot of retail therapy. A family friendly slice of New Zealand, Kaiapoi offers its visitors a wide range of activities for all ages and abilities.

Kaiapoi and its environs have many well-formed and well-marked bush walks, forest walks, coast walks, stopbank walks, lake walks and river walks. The Kaiapoi i-SITE Visitor Centre has a map of six such walks ranging from 3km to 6.5km, which is a great way from which to start exploring the area.

Biking is also encourage around and about, along the river, around Kaiapoi Island, through the forests. The many tracks cover a range suitable for all levels of fitness.

Good fishing can be experienced in the crystal clear waters of the Kaiapoi River. The river has good runs of salmon and is home to an abundance of trout. Whitebaiters have experienced bumper crops of whitebait at the mouth of the Kaiapoi River. Try your luck fishing from the wharf, Waimakariri's McIntosh or the Banana Hole. Flounder and red cod can be caught from the shore. Pick up your fishing licence and fishing access map from the Kaiapoi i-SITE Visitors Centre. Rods and bait are also available for hire.

For water sports, Pegasus Lake, extending to the shores of Pegasus Bay, is a wonderful place to learn and enjoy boating, kayaking, rowing, sailing, paddle boarding and surfing. Alternatively, head to the Waimakariri River for the thrill of jet boating.

The challenging Kaiapoi golf course, with its 24 bunkers and uneven greens, is set amid lush greens and mature leafy trees. It is a truly serene and peaceful setting in which to test your calibre. The Waimakariri Gorge Golf Club at the foothills of the splendid Southern Alps is a delight for all abilities and an opportunity to sample some of New Zealand's finest scenery. The region's newest golf course is to be found at Pegasus and the course is as beautiful as it is entertaining.

View spectacular landscape scenery, river activities and a variety of bird life from the MV Tuhoe Schooner as it cruises the lower Kaiapoi and Waimakariri Rivers. The volunteers who maintain and operate the ship happily make this is a peaceful and relaxing journey.
