Christchurch City

Christchurch City is the garden city of New Zealand. Despite the earthquakes, Christchurch City is still a very beautiful place to visit.

Christchurch is dubbed the Garden City for good reason; it is beautiful, relaxing and has abundant opportunities for play. Situated on the north of the East Coast, Christchurch is New Zealand's second largest city. As host to the island's main international airport it is the gateway of the South Island. It is a vivacious, picturesque city, in places reminiscent of classic England, with a unique backdrop.

Although some of the city's eastern suburbs have suffered earthquake damage, the city has picked itself up and continues to be a wonderful place to call home and an inspiring city to visit.

As its nickname implies, Christchurch is internationally renowned for its numerous well-cared for public gardens and parks. Hagley Park at the city's centre, the Botanic Gardens, Mona Vale rose garden and Victoria Square are examples of the floral visions to behold. Access to the parks may be limited as restoration continues.

The city has wonderful restaurants, cafes and wineries in which to try the regions outstanding fare and to taste the areas highly acclaimed wines. The shopping in Christchurch is fantastic and the city houses many high quality malls. There are plenty of urban activities to keep everybody well entertained.

The Avon River, as it winds peacefully through the city, is a playground in itself. Relax and let the dapper Edwardian, complete with straw boater, punt you down the willow lined river and through pretty gardens. Take the family and gently kayak through the sun-dappled waters at your own pace. Or simply head off on foot and let the river walkway lead you through the beautiful city.

If operational, the vintage tram is a wonderful way to see the city. Hop on and hop off throughout the city as and when the whim takes you. The gondola is another delightful way to see the city. It is currently being refurbished, but when it is up and running it sports stunning views of the Alps, the city, Canterbury plains and Lyttleton harbour. There are many walks in the Port Hills, suitable for varying degrees of fitness, starting from the Gondola. Another alternative is to take the Gondola up to the top and mountain bike down at your leisure.

Christchurch city is a hub of events and festivals. It is one of New Zealand's leading event destinations. Some of the big annual events include the Ellerslie International Flower Show, New Zealand Cup and Show Week, World Buskers Festival and NZ IceFest. These events are embraced by international and national visitors alike.

Art, culture and heritage are enthusiastically supported in Christchurch and many enthralling days can be spent visiting the art galleries, museums, Antarctic links and architectural trails. There is never a shortage of musical events or theatrical shows in Christchurch City. Whatever your taste or style, there will be some entertainment to suit you.

Christchurch City is home to the South Island's biggest sporting events. It is also a place where locals and visitors can enjoy a huge range of sporting experiences, such as fishing, hula hooping, fun runs, horse racing, poker, rugby, boxing and swimming. There is an ice-skating rink, rock climbing wall, high ropes adventure playground, mini-golf courses and so much more.

The beaches are wonderful and conducive to surfing, swimming, fishing and relaxing. There are family beaches and wild beaches, city beaches and beach walks. The views of the sea from the Port Hills are exquisite.

Head outdoors and relax and unwind in any one of Christchurch's many, many beautiful public parks and reserves. The walkways are well signposted, varied, numerous and pass through such a range of landscapes. There is something for all ages and abilities.

Two very big attractions for visitors and locals are Orana Wildlife Park and Willowbank Reserve. Both are focussed on conservation and preservation and the animals are housed as close to their own habitat as possible. Orana Wildlife Park offers up close and personal encounters with the big wild animals. Meanwhile Willowbank, among other treasures, has a fabulous kiwi house, where visitors get to sight kiwi. Willowbank also offers an interesting and fun Maori cultural experience.
