Akaroa - the French quarter of Christchurch

With its French heritage and atmosphere, Akaroa is a charming destination for a romantic weekend or a short break. The town offers a great range of accommodation, seaside cafes, boutiques and village shops.

Situated on the Banks Pensinsula, just 75kms south of Christchurch, Akaroa is on the edge of a flooded crater of an extinct volcano. The crater has formed a beautiful, sheltered harbour, with sparking blue waters and a craggy volcanic coastline.

Akaroa is the start and finish of the Banks Peninsular Track, which is simply stunning and popularly enjoyed as a two or four day guided walk. Walkers enjoy the spectacular scenery, the sandy beaches, the regenerating and ancient forests, waterfalls, wonderful wildlife and birds, including white flippered and little blue penguins.

Some of Akaroa's bays are perfect and safe for swimming (such as Okains and Le Bons Bays) and some of the south east bays are great for surfing (Hickory Bay).

Swimming with dolphins is on many a wish list and Akaroa Harbour, a marine mammal sanctuary, offers you this incredible experience. These clear, glistening waters are home to Hectors Dolphin, the world's rarest and smallest dolphin.

A large variety of picturesque gardens, wineries and farms are open to the public and await exploration.

Okains Bay Maori and Colonial Museum presents historical treasures in a unique, fascinating setting.

There are many ways to explore this slice of paradise; car, boat, kayak, horseback, mountain bike or Shanks' pony (by foot).
